I don’t even know where to begin with this book!
It was such a beautifully written novel that dealt with love, loss, and grief in such a heartfelt way. While reading this book I felt transported into Rachel and Henry’s world and feelings. I felt their pain, their happiness, and every emotion in between!
Cath Crowley did an AMAZING job of creating character connections as well as developing great messages that really make you think. This is definitely a heavy book that will make you so miserable and gratified at the same time.
This novel follows the story of two teenagers just out of high school. Rachel used to be an ambitious, high achieving student until her world got turned upside down after her brother died.
Overcome by grief and with no more desire, she fails senior year and must go back to her hometown to work at a beloved second-hand bookstore.
Henry is a lovestruck, recently heartbroken young man, and manager of his family’s secondhand bookstore. The bookstore has a special corner where people can write to each other inside the books. This can help two people connect without ever having to meet each other.
The letter library was such an interesting concept, and I hope that someday we see them in real life! The library allowed multiple people to put their feelings onto paper and create bonds with others. Some connections even lasted for life. It’s such a captivating idea!
Both the characters learned so much about themselves during the course of the plot. This caused massive character development. For example, through the letter library Rachel learns more about the grief that’s she’s feeling and it helps shape her into a better person.
Rachel’s character development was written in an extremely powerful way. It was gradual but still made an everlasting difference. Instead of a certain moment that changed her character, it happened slowly and over time. A lot of books tend to have the character have a pivotal point where they change 180 degrees, but this book did it slower which helped me resonate with it.
Words In Deep Blue really makes you stop and just think. There were multiple times where I had force myself to put it down so I could think and register everything going on. I adored that!
Every page was written with exceptional passion and thought, and the concepts it discusses are so important and relevant. Although I do love a good lighthearted book, it’s also important to learn from books. This one teaches you so much in an engaging way!
While this book is a terrific read, it is important to keep in mind the writing style. It is a little bit choppy and confusing at certain points of the book. While it didn’t bother me, it could be annoying for some readers.
Finally, the last thing I want to rave about is the world-building in the bookstore. I felt like I was actually in the letter library reading everyone else’s letters and watching the story unfold! Since the bookstore is where the majority of the story takes place, there was a lot of time to build off of and describe it. It made the story feel even more real and genuine.
All in all, this was a glamourously crafted novel that I believe everybody should read! I would rate it 4.5/5 stars for its ability to teach you so much in a small amount of time.
