My thoughts-
I’ll start this review by saying that this book really surprised me!
I was expecting it to be another cute, rom-com with the same rough cut as millions of other books. And although I definitely enjoy my fair share of cliche rom-coms, I was going into this one without many expectations. Frankly, I was getting a bit bored of the same old thing. Little did I know that I would end up LOVING this book!
The first thing that really got me excited was the fact that the book took place in the one and only… Upper East Side of New York. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the Gossip Girl references, as well as the prep school setting.
As I mentioned earlier I really didn’t think this was going to be much different from the millions of other rom-com novels out there, but this read amazed me. Something about the author’s ability and tone made it really engaging and somehow just a little different. The lively banter between the two characters was everything for me!
Honestly, I loved the dynamic between Pepper and Jack. Their mismatched personalities made the book a hundred times better! The way that the two characters helped each other to face their fears and find their passions made this a super interesting read. I was definitely rooting for this relationship! However, while I really did enjoy the characters overall, I felt that at certain times (especially with Pepper) we only see a very one-dimensional personality, and that tends to make me feel that they were a bit too cliche.
Pepper was the model student, swim captain, and goody two shoes, while Jack was the goofy class clown trapped in his popular twin brother’s shadow. These are two pretty cliche characters and while I loved the character development, this did bug me just a little.
Overall, while the characters were quite fun to read about, I think what really set this book apart was the plot. I had never read anything close to a twitter love story! Genuinely I think that using the twitter background was new and different. As a teenager who doesn’t even have a twitter account, it was still easy to follow along to and I actually really enjoyed it.
What grew my opinion of this book was the twitter aspect of the plot. To me, it really helped keep things engaging when there wasn’t really much else going on. The love story portion was superrrr slooowwww and I really wished that things would move along faster. The first two-thirds barely had anything concerning feelings between Pepper and Jack and that made some parts hard to get through.
Still, the slow plot really did pick up towards the end, and I personally believe that the twitter war+the end really made up for it. Honestly, this issue really didn’t change my opinion, but it is definitely worth noting.
In general, I think that this was a successful new take on a young adult rom-com and except for a few minor concerns I loved it! I would rate it a ⅘ for its uniqueness plus the plot and I would definitely recommend that you read this book too!
