This book left me with a lot of unanswered questions! I flew right through it, and by the end, I was confused but also surprised but also amazed?
If you haven’t already read the first book in this series, definitely go check it out! It’s called One of Us is Lying and it is simply awesome! This book is the sequel, and while sequels usually leave you with something to be desired, this one was surprisingly really good.
The beginning started a little bit slow. Nothing happened during the first hundred pages, which gave you a lot of time to learn more about the characters. During this part of the book, the story was still getting set up. This annoyed me a bit, but when it started, it all made sense.
This was just the intense but lighthearted book that I needed, and somehow Kathryn McManus always has a way to make such a serious topic seem so interesting and light. The characters were just as interesting as the first, and the dynamic was everything.
One of Us is Next is focused on three main characters, Maeve, Phoebe, and Knox. Maeve is actually sisters with Bronwyn from the original! They are all seniors at Bayview High recovering from the frightening events that happened in the first book.
Since then, multiple other kids had tried to live up to Simon’s extravaganza… No one was able to… until now.
A new texting game pops up, yet this time it’s truth or dare. Seemingly for fun at first, things get serious fast with death and possibly murder? As everything escalated because of the game, it’s up to Maeve, Phoebe, and Knox to figure it out.
As the first targets of the Truth or Dare texting game, they have a feeling that they are somehow interconnected to this elaborate scheme, and they’ve got to figure out why.
The character dynamic was EVERYTHING. Just like One of Us is Lying, the relationships that these characters build for each other was so amazing and fun to watch.
They each faced their own round of character development, and watching them grow into what they become is a captivating journey. Past that, the underlying mystery and plot allowed for a beautifully crafted story!
As I briefly mentioned earlier, the book doesn’t begin for the first hundred pages. While I get that this was necessary later on in the book, there were times in which it wasn’t as much fun to pick up. It was hard to understand which way the book was going, and that can be frustrating!
Still, once it picked up, it was extremely intriguing and exciting! This made up for the slowness, but if you are looking for a book that jumps into it right away, this may not be the best choice right now.
Finally, I wanted to talk about the ending. Wow. Just wow. Let’s just say I did not see that one coming… I can’t reveal too much without spoiling the entire book, but be prepared to have your hand clap to your mouth MULTIPLE TIMES…
I feel like with One of Us is Lying I had a feeling on who it was the whole time, but One of Us is Next is a completely different story! Check this book out if you haven’t already.
As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While there were some smaller flaws, as a whole I could not keep it down! Definitely one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year. If you haven’t already make sure to go check out One of Us is Lying as well as One of Us is Next. Happy Reading!
