He pulled me a little closer, held me a little tighter. And this time, we escaped together.
Honestly, this book is just what I needed! I’ve been stuck in a giant reading slump for quite a while now, and it’s been hard to find good books and motivation to read. Because of school, life has become super busy, and any extra time is hard to find.
Nonetheless, every time I picked up a book I would get bored easily and quickly put it down. This went on for quite a while until I decided to change things up a little bit.
Instead of searching for a book that’s going to be deep, long, and mentally exhausting, I looked for a short lighthearted book that could be used as an escape. I think I finally found it! The Upside of Falling was an adorable, hard to put down a book that completely swished me out of the slump.
This read follows the story of two seniors in high school, Brett, and Becca. They were complete and opposites, and barely even knew each other’s names. When Becca’s ex-best friend comes out bragging about her amazing boyfriend’s advice, Becca is fed up and decides to do something about it.
One thing leads to another and by the end, Brett and Becca are… fake dating? They both have their own separate motives, but soon the lines between fake and real begin to blur. At some point, they had to make a choice, what was really going on?
As I mentioned earlier, the lighthearted and fun elements of this book are really what kept me engaged and excited. I didn’t have to think too hard about it, and every time I read it, I could escape.
Now, on some things I really enjoyed!
First of all, the witty banter between these two characters is SO. MUCH. FUN. Whenever you would get slightly bored, or when the plot didn’t move too fast this character relationship kept me distracted. Brett and Becca actually liked each other for their personalities, and that really showed throughout the book.
Their relationship was less superficial, more about what they enjoyed, and how they built off of each other. They both tremendously improved as characters, and probably couldn’t have done it without having their “fake” relationship.
They brought out the best in each other, and all around were such a good match! For me, that’s probably what drew me into this book. It was so perfect, but it still had problems, the characters were living great lives, but they also faced challenges.
The book mentioned multiple in-depth scenarios that could also be portrayed in everyday life. Becca’s parents had gone through an odd divorce, and Brett’s family seemed great on the outside, but on the inside, more was going on…
In general, what really brought this book up were the characters. Everything about their development, personalities, and relationships made it so nice! It actually reminded me of a lot of Tweet Cute.
Now, the only problem that I would ever have about anything in this story was some parts of the plot. To be completely honest, it was very predictable.
From the second I picked it up, I knew what was going to happen and how the character’s relationship would end up. There weren’t any surprising plot twists and everything remained relatively constant.
For me, I could overlook it, due to some other parts of the book. I think I needed something like this to just take a deep breath and relax. This book did just that! Although it was cliche, I almost enjoyed the normalcy, and it helped me get out of the slump. Still, I know many other readers could potentially have problems with this.
Overall, I would rate this book ⅘ stars. It took me out of a massive reading slump and didn’t make me think too hard. If you are suffering from something similar to what I felt, I definitely recommend that you check it out. You won’t regret it! Anyways, have a great day and happy reading!
